I only ever share products I actually like and would use with the dogs in my care.

Most dogs get pretty excited when they hear the leash come out - but a good walk can be about so much more than getting some exercise and checking a bathroom break off the list.

Walks are one of the best opportunities our dogs have to explore the world outside their homes.

New smells, different routes, a little training, and even having some say in where they go can turn an ordinary walk around the block into something much more interesting.

The best part? You don’t necessarily need to walk farther or longer. A few small changes can make the walks you’re already taking much more enriching.

Let Them Stop and Sniff

We’ve all been there: your dog has been investigating the same patch of grass for what feels like five minutes, and you’re ready to move on.

But to your dog, that patch of grass is full of information.

Dogs use their noses to learn about their surroundings, and giving them time to sniff provides valuable mental stimulation. A slower walk with plenty of sniffing can sometimes be more fulfilling than simply trying to cover as much distance as possible.

Try setting aside a few walks each week where there’s no rush. Let your dog linger at an interesting tree, investigate the grass, and enjoy the walk at their own pace.

Helpful to have: A comfortable, well-fitting harness can make slower exploration walks easier, especially for dogs who like to follow their noses.

Change Up Your Route

You don't have to find a brand-new hiking trail every week to give your dog something new to explore.

Walk your normal neighborhood loop backward. Turn down a street you usually pass. Visit a grassy area instead of staying on the sidewalk.

Different environments mean different sights and, more importantly to your dog, different smells.

Even a small change can make an everyday walk feel new.

Give Your Dog Some Freedom

We make most of our dogs' decisions for them - when they eat, when they go outside, and usually where they walk.

When it's safe, try handing over a few of those decisions.

Giving dogs appropriate opportunities to make choices can be another form of enrichment and engagement.

For dogs who enjoy a little more freedom to explore, a long line and well-fitting harness can also be useful in an appropriate open space.

A long line isn't something we'd use for a regular sidewalk walk, but in the right environment it can give a dog more room to safely sniff and explore.

Bring Treats and Turn Your Walk Into a Game

A handful of treats can completely change a walk.

Practice an easy cue at the park. Reward your dog when they voluntarily check in with you. Toss a treat into the grass and tell them to “find it!”

Suddenly your regular walk includes movement, sniffing, problem-solving, and a little training.

You don't need to spend the entire walk practicing commands, either. A few quick games here and there are plenty.

A small treat pouch makes this much easier because your rewards are right there when you need them.

Bring Along Their Favorite Kind of Fun

Not every dog finds the same things rewarding.

Some dogs could sniff for an hour.

Some want to chase.

Some want treats.

And some would happily play tug with you anywhere, anytime.

If your dog is especially toy-motivated, bring a small favorite toy along and add a quick play break somewhere appropriate. If they're food motivated, bring treats and play a few scent games.

Enrichment works best when it's based on what your individual dog actually enjoys, rather than trying to make every dog enjoy the same activity.

Dont Forget Water

Especially here in Hawaiʻi, enrichment should never come at the expense of keeping your dog comfortable.

For longer adventures, having water with you is always a good idea. A collapsible bowl or dog water bottle is easy to throw into your walking bag without carrying much extra.

And on particularly warm days, sometimes the best enrichment walk is simply a shorter, slower, sniffier walk rather than trying to cover a lot of ground.

Your Walk Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

The goal isn't to turn every walk into an elaborate enrichment activity.

Sometimes you only have 15 minutes. Sometimes your dog just needs to go potty. And sometimes you want to put your headphones in and walk.

That's okay.

Try adding just one or two of these ideas to your normal routine. Let your dog sniff a little longer. Take a different street. Bring a few treats.

Those little moments can make an ordinary neighborhood walk a lot more interesting from your dog's point of view.

And that's something we believe in at Sunshine Pets, too. Our walks aren't about checking a box or seeing how many miles we can cover.

We get to know each dog's personality and what they enjoy - whether that's exploring every interesting smell along the way or getting those paws moving!
