If there's one question I hear more than any other on my morning visits, it's some version of this:

"How do I keep my dog happy while I'm gone all day?"

And honestly, I love getting asked, because the fix is usually a lot simpler than people think.

Here's the thing I've noticed after a lot of years and a lot of dogs: how the morning goes tends to set the tone for the whole day.

Give a dog a little something to do early on - a walk, a puzzle, a reason to use their nose - and they'll usually settle in and rest through the quiet middle hours instead of pacing around looking for trouble. Skip it, and, well… that's often when the shoe gets chewed.

So let me walk you through the little routine I recommend to clients. None of it is complicated, and most of it takes just a few minutes before you head out the door.

Start With a Good Morning

Make Breakfast a Job

A couple of days a week, try skipping the bowl. Scatter your dog's kibble out in the grass, or stuff it into a rubber toy so they have to work for it.

It sounds too simple to matter, but sniffing and problem-solving for food genuinely wears a dog out - in the best way.

A stuffable KONG toy is my go-to for this. Pack it with a little peanut butter or their wet food, freeze it overnight, and you've handed your pup a project that keeps them busy long after you've locked the door.

Get Out For a Quick Walk

Even fifteen minutes around the block before work does more than you'd expect. All that sniffing is mental exercise as much as physical, and it takes the fizz out of that restless morning energy so it doesn't come out sideways later.

Set the House Up for the Day

Let Them Forage

Dogs are foragers by nature - it's wired into them.

A snuffle mat leans into that instinct beautifully. Just sprinkle a portion of their food down into the little fabric "grass" and let them nose it out. What would've been a thirty-second gulp of a meal turns into a happy fifteen-minute hunt.

Give Them a Puzzle to Solve

If your dog likes a challenge, a treat puzzle is a great way to keep their brain busy.

The good ones come in different difficulty levels, so you can start easy and make it trickier as your pup figures things out.

I'm partial to the freezable, dishwasher-safe kind - on a hectic morning, "grab it, fill it, go" is exactly what you want.

Rotate the Toys

This one's free, and it's my favorite trick. Tuck a few toys away and rotate them every few days. To your dog, the ones that come back out feel brand new - suddenly that raggedy old rope toy is the most exciting thing in the house again. Novelty is honestly half the battle.

Don't Forget the Middle of the Day

Here's where I'll be straight with you: mornings help a lot, but the stretch between breakfast and dinner is the long one.

Even the most well-prepped dog eventually runs out of things to do and ends up parked by the window, waiting.

That's the gap a midday walk fills. It burns off the energy they used to get from backyard romps, gives them a change of scenery, and honestly just resets their whole afternoon.

And that's exactly what we're here for. A familiar face turning up mid-morning or midday - a good walk, some playtime, fresh water, a little love - turns a long, empty day into an easy one.

It really is the difference between a dog who's getting through the day and one who's actually enjoying it.

We've got a few openings right now for morning and midday walks in Kailua. Reach out anytime to set up a free meet & greet - we'd love to come say hello.

That's really what Sunshine Pets comes down to: steady, personal care that meets your dog right where they are. Thank you for trusting us with your furry family - getting to be part of their lives means the world to us.
